Clocks and Rechargeable Batteries

This used to my favorite clock. It was less than five bucks, it gave a reasonable approximation of the temperature and humidity, and was rather nice looking. The problem: it does not work with rechargeable batteries. I've tried three different brands (including Eneloops) and got no moving time. I did try and Google this one up, to no avail. Perhaps it has something to do with a discharge rate discrepancy between rechargeable and regulars? I hate wasting a new battery on this thing every couple of months. So instead, I have set it to the best time ever for a clock: 10:10, where it is perpetually smiling. OK, so maybe 10:08.
