Frozen Refrigerator/Freezer Water Dispenser

The vitriol on the GE message boards about their side by side refrigerator/freezer water dispenser problems is something to behold. People ranting about not buying any GE products ever again...I guess you have to do what you have to do. We've had our our unit for about 9 years and this is really the first problem we have had with it besides the defrost line also getting frozen at the bottom of the freezer a couple of years ago that resulted in a little bit of water getting on the floor. Anyhow, I don't know why the water dispenser froze up all the sudden, nor does it really matter; just needed to fix it since spouses are not happy when [insert appliance name here] are not working. I documented my attempted cheap fix to this problem here. But first I had to thaw the line, which is not well documented on the internet. Thus I winged it and used a hair dryer for 15 minutes on the back and front of the freezer door. If you go this route, I highly recommend using a long blanket to drape over the main part of the freezer to keep the cool air in so you don't have to put everything in coolers. After thawing, you should check out this video on YouTube How to fix GE Refrigerator Frozen dispenser or water line no water. This guy used some trimmer line to keep his water dispenser working. Mine kept freezing, even with the line, but the line did enable us to break up the ice by pulling on it when it froze again. You can see some the trimmer line sticking out of the nozzle in the picture. Basically, it is 12 inches of line that you slide up the dispenser (if it is clear). Luckily, GE sent us the little heater part to fix the problem permanently.
